ATTENTION! - GETTIN' ALL... (LP/SCREAMING APPLE) Two years after the release of their highly acclaimed self-titled debut-album, Vienna's very own mods The Attention! return with a bang! Stylish from head to toe they deliver a frantic mixture of traditional blues, soul, beat and r'n'b, seldom heard since the days of The Yardbirds, Animals, Them and Spencer Davis Group.
LORD VICAR - SIGNS OF OSIRIS (2LP/CHURCH WITHIN) Firmly walking in the footsteps of Saint Vitus, Trouble, Witchfinder General and Pentagram, this band brings together an international line-up of four devoted metalheads. Here's is a vinyl version of the excellent second full length album by these undisputed doom metal giants.
SIGIRIYA - RETURN TO EARTH (LP/CHURCH WITHIN) Sigiriya rose from the ashes of Welsh stoner doom merchants Acrimony. While Acrimony hailed from the temples of deepest space, Sigiriya come from the earthy depths, bringing hefty, tremor-inducing sonics that pay homage to the riff. Limited vinyl issue.
ERIC THIELEMANS - EARR PLAYS A SNARE IS A BELL (LP/SUB ROSA) 'EARR Plays A Snare Is A Bell' revisits the roll and it's overtones by an ensemble of musicians with very different musical backgrounds. Another intriguing Sub Rosa-title.
BLOODSHOT BILL - THE OUT OF THIS WORLD SOUNDS OF (10"/SQUOODGE/LUNAR) Bloodshot Bill is an exceptional rockabilly freak! Since 2001, he released several records each year on various international labels, including Norton, Hog Maw, Sultan and the Flying Saucer. In addition he plays in dozens of bands, most notably the Tandoori Knights and Ding Dongs. Bloodshot Bill is a full-blooded musician and here is his exciting new eight-song 10".
LUNAR ABYSS DEUS ORGANUM - ATANIMONNI AITNATSBUS (10"/SUBSTANTIA INNO) A 10" from Russian artist Evgeny Savenko, offering a unique style of music. He combines elements of droning ambient industrial, traditional folklore, electronics, tribal and trancy psychedelia, and then adds sound-experiments, often based on field recordings. A strong DIY-attitude is connected with a shamanistic and pan-religious philosophy.
SEID - THE MAGIC HANDSHAKE (2LP-CD/BLACK WIDOW) On double LP and CD, this is a new title from highly regarded psych-heads Seid, operating in a slightly altered line-up. Original members Burt Rocket, Organ Morgan, Janis Lazzaroni and Jurgen Kosmos have recruited Viktor Martin on drums, vocals and electronics. The band refers to their music as "Cosmic Pirate Rock", which isn't necessarily a self-explanatory description. Let's say you combine Hawkwind's style of space-rock with a psychedelic '70s groove à la Gong, sprinkled with a solid dose of rock steroids for muscle.
NORTHWINDS - WINTER (LP/BLACK WIDOW) The long awaited fourth album from Parisian doom-progsters Northwinds. Including the Angel Witch-cover 'Gorgon', this is another convincing set that will excite fans of f.i. Black Sabbath, Horslips and Witchfinder General.
SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT - SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT EP (CD/WORLD IN SOUND) A remastered re-issue of their first release, a four track EP with a running time of 33 minutes, originally dating from 2009. The music here is way more rural 60s acid-jam psychedelia than on their two official albums, 'Long Distance Trip' and this year's 'Revelation And Mystery'. You hear a strong Hendrix (think 'Electric Ladyland') vibe, with tons of echo and space effects plus extended sitar excursions in the vein of Ananda Shankar. Limited edition of 500-copies.
ORCUS CHYLDE - ORCUS CHYLDE (LP-CD/WORLD IN SOUND) The debut long player from a fine German six piece. The eight intelligent songs on this album are rooted firmly in the late psychedelic era and the progressive, Kraut-scented '70s. 'Orchus Chylde' is a damn fresh, intense and noteworthy album.
GIN LADY - GIN LADY (CD/TRANSUBSTANS) Formed by ex-members of Black Bonzo, this new band delivers an album with less prog influences. In return you get a somewhat classic rock-like approach. The appealing (still Hammond-driven) results bring to mind Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and even Australian heroes the Master's Apprentices. Nine tracks.
PACESHIFTERS - HOME (LP/MINSTREL) Following their split EP with The Supersuckers and the well received debut album 'One For The Road', self-proclaimed "High Voltage Alternative Rockers" Paceshifters deliver their impressive sophomore album, entitled 'Home'. For their latest effort the three-piece travelled to Durango, Colorado, in order to work under the guidance of producer Ed Stasium of Ramones, Talking Heads and Living Colour fame. Available on black and coloured vinyl. By the way, the album release party takes place in Zwolle, on May 26th at Eureka!
DER NOIR - A DEAD SUMMER (LP/BLOODROCK) Italian gloomsters Der Noir (what's in a name?!) come up with their debut-LP. On 'A Dead Summer' these Romans successfully revive the dark eighties, drawing influences from gothic titans à la Sisters Of Mercy. UK Decay, Bauhaus and Christian Death. Wake up the bats!
ELECTRIC SWAN - SWIRL IN GRAVITY (LP/BLACK WIDOW) Electric Swan is the solo project of Wicked Minds guitarist and founding member, Lucio Calegari. Nevertheless, 'Swirl In Gravity' was recorded with a full band. This is an appealing and diverse offering, inspired by legendary rock acts s.a. Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zep, Black Widow, Deep Purple, Free, Atomic Rooster, Soundgarden and many others.
FARFLUNG/BLACK LAND - ORBITAL DECAY/ECSTACY OF AWAKENING (LP/BLOODROCK) Two bands on one vinyl platter. Farflung is one of America's leading space rock outfits, with six LP's under their belt, and stellar voyages near and afar. Black Land hail from Italy. Though the band's name might raise expectations of goat worshippers and depressed doom metal, in reality they are a heavy, psychedelic, stoner and kraut inspired unit.
FUNERAL MARMOORI - VOLUME 1 (LP-CD/BLOODROCK) Heavy progressive doom from Florence, Italy! Their debut full length offers dark sounds, with lots of keyboards (particularly the Farfisa organ), tipping the hat to Italian pioneers Death SS, Paul Chain Violet Theatre, a.o.
DRUID LORD - DRUID DEATH CULT (7"/DOOMENTIA) With a history in bands s.a. Incubus, Diabolic, Acheron and the sadly overlooked Equinox, the members of Druid Lord (formed in 2010) have collected plenty of experience and credibility. Indeed, these guys are the real deal and this 7" is their heaviest release so far! Twelve merciless minutes that are bound to firmly put Druid Lord at the top of the old-school doom/death foodchain. Comes with gatefold sleeve, insert and poster.
60’s & 70’s & 80’s (RE-)RELEASES AND ARTISTS + OTHER OLDIES
COSMIC DEALER - CRYSTALLIZATION (2LP/PSEUDONYM) Pseudonym Records are about to release another album of superb material from the rich vaults of Dutch psychedelic/progressive history. Featuring ex-members of famous garage-psych-freakbeat combo The Zipps, five-piece Cosmic Dealer was responsible for one of the best Dutch albums of the early '70s. That LP, 'Crystallization' now sees a welcome reissue, including a sensational second platter of additional demo recordings, single versions and other rare cuts. Awesome! Remastered from the original master tapes, this set comes in a great gatefold sleeve, including liner notes from Ugly Things' Mike Stax.
BLACK WIDOW - SEES THE LIGHT OF DAY (2LP+10"-2CD/BLACK WIDOW) A stunning collection of live recordings from a show in Milan that took place in 1971, plus the '69 demo version of 'Sacrifice' and other rarities, available as double CD and double LP + 10". A must have for all the fans of this legendary British pioneers of dark rock.
HOMER - COMPLETE RECORDINGS (CD/GEARFAB) Texan outfit Homer (featuring some ex-members of The Stoics) was responsible for a highly rated album that was released in 1970. The band's music had one foot firmly planted in late '60s psychedelia, but also revealed traces of melodic '70s AOR-rock. But don't let that put you off, coz' in the end Homer's sound was in extremely good taste and way too unusual for mainstream radio stations. This comprehensive 19-track CD (presented in digipack) features the band's sole album, rare singles tracks and recently discovered demo's. Fabulous stuff!
CRYSTAL PHOENIX - CRYSTAL PHOENIX (LP/BLACK WIDOW) A reissue of the mythical, first ever Black Widow Records release, dating from 1992! Crystal Phoenix' s/t album offers a mixture of folk, progressive rock and epic metal that still sounds as fresh and relevant as it did 20 years ago. Comes with the original artwork and no less than four bonus tracks, including demo recordings from '89 and a recent version of 'Anno Domini'.
ROTOMAGUS - SKY TURNS RED: COMPLETE ANTHOLOGY (LP/LION PRODUCTIONS) A sublime collection of recordings from French late '60s-early '70s outfit Rotomagus, who back in the day were signed to CBS. They started out as a typical late '60s flower-power-harmony-popsike band, then shifted through a brief Hendrix-inspired phase, straight into a heavy Vanilla Fudge-like style. This disc includes the band's entire official output, enriched with demo recordings featuring some surprisingly proto-punkish outbursts. Nice!
ALT. VINYL has announced a number of adventurous experimental/ground breaking upcoming titles. These include limited edition LP"s by HAPSBURG BRAGANZA (2LP 'RECURRING DREAMS' - see artwork), INVISIBLE SPORTS (ft. Volcano The Bear's Aaron Moore), NICK MOTT ('The Visitors'), Daniel Padden's ONE ENESMBLE, and Brooklyn based WINTER FAMILY.
More expected releases come from reissue label BIG PINK. Fans of '60s and '70s music will look forward to CD's of American folk-rockers JOYOUS NOISE (2 titles), loner folk artist JAMES McCARTHY (1971's 'Born A Loser'), OLOMANA (dreamy Hawaiian folk-pop from '76) and X-ian folk musician KARL OLSEN (his self released album from '77).
SELECTED PRESS QUOTES
BLACK PYRAMID - BLACK PYRAMID (2LP/HEADSPIN) reviewed by Paul Rigby for Record Collector (excerpt) A mystical etching graces one side, while the other three offer a stylistic approach harking back to the classic British metal of Black Sabbath.
DARXTAR - AGED TO PERFECTION (CD/TRANSUBSTANS) reviewed by Jan-Simon for Lords Of Metal (translated excerpt) Spacerock with a style reminding of Pink Floyd and almost forgotten prog dinosaurs from the early '70s, that's how one can describe Darxtar's music.
ROY & THE DEVIL'S MOTORCYCLE - FORGOTTEN MILLION SELLERS (CD/VOODOO RHYTHM) reviewed by Jurgen Dignef for Goddeau (translated excerpt) ...in their early days they were much more noise orientated than on their latest two albums.
ROY & THE DEVIL'S MOTORCYCLE - TELL IT TO THE PEOPLE (CD/VOODOO RHYTHM) reviewed by Jurgen Dignef for Goddeau (translated excerpt) ...'Tell It To The People' is their best album so far.
DAT POLITICS - BLITZ GAZER (CD/SUB ROSA) reviewed by Sven Schlijper for KindaMuzik (translated excerpt) ...the odd robot ballad is forgiven, since 'Blitz Gazer' mostly is party-hardy, tongue-in-cheek and catchy as fuck.
BRAT FARRAR (s/t LP on P.TRASH/CD on OFF THE HIP) LIVE AT VERA - reviewed by Joost Jan Meertens for Planet Trash (translated excerpt) Straight up Aussie punk is what the three piece serves...
60’s & 70’s & 80’s (RE-)RELEASES AND ARTISTS + OTHER OLDIES
