SPOTLIGHT 435

27/01/2014 12:19

Now that Blue Monday is out of the way, let's focus on the great things happening this time of year! Fruits de Mer's ever-popular colored psych singles are back, along with new Scandinavian space rock & stoner, the best kraut/doom to come out of Scotland, garage bands old & new, punk reissues and the elusive Coil/NIN EP finally gets an official release. Furthermore, Mississippi Records proves again to be one of the most versatile labels out there with 70's Mayan music, black power anthems, conteporary cello and more. Lastly, we listed some great shows that are coming up this winter/spring (Grauzone, Roadburn, Crabstock, etc.)!

PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE

We are expecting a new batch of singles from Fruits de Mer Records in March! There are five singles - from Schnauser, Bronco Bullfrog, Crystal Jacqueline and The Honey Pot, Schizo Fun Addict, Us and Them; They will definitely sound wonderful - including new versions of songs by Yes, Mighty Baby, Donovan, The Electric Prunes, Sands, Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, Sandy Denny, Jefferson Airplane plus the theme from 'Suspiria', and new songs from Bronco Bullfrog, Us and Them, and The Honey Pot.

BRONCO BULLFROG - TIME WAITS FOR NORMAN (7"/FRUITS DE MER)

Limited pressing on coloured vinyl. It's as if progressive rock and the following 40 years never happened... Bronco Bullfrog recreate the psychedelic sounds of England circa '66-'68 with love, care, affection, an ear for "catchy tunes" and a musical ability not equalled by many contemporaries. Listen to their own compositions and you're transported back to a heady mix of Kaleidoscope and The Kinks. Here are two original songs and a cover of the '67 Sands freakbeat classic, 'Listen To The Sky'. Tracks: 01. Time Waits For Norman 02. Rocking Horse Mender 03. Listen To The Sky

JACQUELINE, CRYSTAL -& THE HONEY POT- - REMEMBER A DAY + 6 (2X7") (7"/FRUITS DE MER)

Limited pressing on coloured vinyl, including a gatefold sleeve and an 8-page booklet. Crystal Jacqueline's second release on Fruits de Mer is a wonderful double 7-inch that offers great covers of legendary songs from '60s psych heroes s.a. Jefferson Airplane ('White Rabbit'), Fleur De Lys ('Tick Tock'), Pink Floyd ('Remember A Day'), Icarus Peel ('It's Raining'), The Electric Prunes ('I Had Too Much To Dream') and Mighty Baby ('Egyptian Tomb'), and legendary UK prog band Curved Air ('Puppets'). Fans of late '60s psych splendour will love this awesome release!

SCHIZO FUN ADDICT - THEME FROM SUSPIRIA (7"/FRUITS DE MER)

Limited-pressing on coloured vinyl, presented with an insert postcard. Schizo Fun Addict, the U.S. band responsible for the very first release on Fruits de Mer Records (2008) return to deliver a wild 7-inch. This release contains off-kilter versions of tracks from the cult films 'Suspiria' (the highly-rated but rarely-watched 1977 Italian horror flick with a soundtrack by Goblin) and Russ Meyer's 1970 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls'. Tracks: 1. Theme from Suspiria 2. In The Long Run (from the film 'Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls')

SCHNAUSER - ASTRAL TRAVELLER (7"/FRUITS DE MER)

Limited pressing on coloured vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. Five years of activity, and not a Yes or Soft Machine cover to be seen?! It's high time Fruits de Mer put that right. Enter Schnauser, the Bristol-based prog rockers whose album 'Where Business Meets Fashion' met with much praise from critics. Schnauser did a superb job on reinterpreting tracks by two bands with little in common, but somehow they go together very well. Tracks: 01. Astral Traveller 02. As Long As He Lies Perfectly Still

US AND THEM - BY THE TIME IT GETS DARK (7"/FRUITS DE MER)

Limited pressing on coloured vinyl. Acoustic folk, with hints of acid-folk/folktronica (unless that's a defunct genre, in which there aren't any) Us and Them (Fruits de Mer's favourite Scandanavian duo) do what we've been quietly hoping they would do for a long time: reinterpret one of Sandy Denny's songs. One of Sandy's lesser-known songs, 'By The Time It Gets Dark' (sung by the duo's Britt) is simply beautiful, and it wipes the floor with many other exisiting Denny covers. Also present are 'Jabberwocky', a delightful version of Donovan's reworking of Lewis Carroll's prose, and an epic song written by Us and Them themselves. Tracks: 01. By The Time It Gets Dark 02. Jabberwocky 03. Do I Know You

MR. PETER HAYDEN - WE FLY HIGH (7"/MIKROFONI)

Limited 7" single by Finland's psychedelic/spacerock outfit MR. PETER HAYDEN. They travel in space and time in the spirit of forgotten 70's German krautrockers and doped up Deep Purple. They deliver their art honouring the forgotten ways of Finnish magic and the shamans who once had the pure knowledge of it.

MY DILIGENCE - WHO KILLED THE DRIVER EP (12"/SELF RELEASE)

Debut release by new Belgian STONER/PSYCH/DESERT ROCK band. A Limited 200 copies 5 TRACK EP. CHUCK NORRIS EXPERIMENT - (BLACK) RIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES (LP/TRANSUBSTANS)

Flashing out of Gothenburg, Sweden, the rock monster CHUCK NORRIS EXPERIMENT celebrate 10 years as a band with the release of their sixth studio album. CHUCK NORRIS EXPERIMENT has left a trail of CD's, LP's, singles, comps and tributes behind them during the years and they shared vinyl or CD-space with bands like Electric Frankenstein, Mad Sin, Bones, V8 Wankers, Twisted Sister, Mondo Generator, Danko Jones and many more. Most of those releases are long gone, but the band promises to keep on releasing punk rock 7-inch singles like there is no tomorrow. CHUCK NORRIS EXPERIMENT is often believed to have been named after the US martial arts champion Chuck Norris. But as all true believers and lovers of Rock'n'Roll know, the band name is a tribute to the legendary American blues guitarist Charles "Chuck" Norris, who recorded the classic live album 'Los Angeles Flash' in the band's hometown Gothenburg on June 25, 1980.

CIRCLE - HOLLYWOOD (2LP) (LP/FULL CONTACT)

Circle: No beginning and no end, and when you think you've come upon the conclusion you're back at the start. Perhaps this describes Circle's compositional work ethic more than anything. Circle is a west coast rock band, the west coast of Finland, that is. They live in a city called Pori, further north than the capital, Helsinki, and Stockholm, Sweden to the east. With its bustling harbor, growing industry and its own jazz festival, Pori also is home to Finland's most visible underground rock band, Circle. Their latest in a long line of innovative recordings, 'Hollywood', lists them as a "new exciting band from Finland." To most people, this is true enough, but to those paying attention, Circle has been making some of the most original modern rock music since the beginning of the 90s. Formed by bassist/guitarist/vocalist/creative wildman Jussi Lehtisalo, the group has been on an endless journey of musical exploration since they began. Besides being consummate players, the band are avid music collectors and enthusiasts; hence, Circle music and records have many stylistic touchstones, most notably krautrock, artrock, avant garde, prog, and cinematic post rock. Just when you think youre getting a handle on them, though, you see they also have a deep love of heavy metal, particularly from the 1980s, all manner of punk rock, as well as Velvet-style droning and even country and folk music. (Their love of metal forged their now infamous tagline-NWOFHM. Get it?) Some have called them Finland's mighty masters of metallic hypno drone rock. The band that has been known for lyrics created in their own made-up language (known as Meronian) a la Magma or Sigur Ros. Wiseass Bruce Duff (previously know as singer for alternative metal band 'Jesters Of Destiny') chose to reduce everything to its lowest common denominator, otherwise known as English.

CIRCLE - SSEENNSSEESS (BLACK) (LP/FULL CONTACT)

"Finnish supergroup Circle and filmmaker/artist Mika Taanila's new SSEENNSSEESS show is spectacular, somewhat akin' to an over-the-top rock opera and a theatrical audio-visual performance with dashes of glam rock, improv, metal, French chanson, and The Shangri-La's as well as Taanila's perfectly timed, 16mm projections. A feast for the senses." ~Ruth Timmermans, Gonzo (circus). This live album was recorded at the premiere of the show at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki on November 22, 2013. The LP features four brand-new beautifully arranged songs by the band: 'Kudos,' 'Radiant,' 'Sleepwalker,' and 'Terminal.' Limited to 350 copies on black vinyl.

Listen to 'Terminal (live)' HERE.

COSMIC DEAD - EASTERFAUST (LP/SOUND OF COBRA)

Since 2010, The Cosmic Dead have been exploring the outer reaches of kraut rock, doom and psychedelia, tasting the extremes of sound and fusing them into a single, all-enveloping web of stratospheric riffing, otherworldly ambience and kosmic textures that has spread itself across countless shows throughout all Europe. Remember that satanic drug thing you didn't understand? Forget about it! Here comes the new breed and it's a fierce and fiery force! A creeping barrage of sound that embodies the spirit of heavy psychedelic freak-outs from the Godz and Hawkind to early Monster Magnet (25... Tab-era) and Acid Mother's Temple to set you afire. Want some? Tune in, turn on, get burned! Limited to 400 copies on 180-gram marble coloured vinyl.

Listen to ÉasterFaust' HERE.

This alternative rock band from Athens, Greece won the first prize in the 2nd European Rock Contest in Copenhagen, 1996. This is their first LP. Alternative rock full of psychedelic vibes.

SOULBREAKER COMPANY - GRACELESS (2LP/BLACK) (LP/ALONE)

"'Graceless' is the logic succession to its predecessor. They overcome the challenge providing newness in such a way that does not alter the crux. Outstanding both on the console and the stage. A+." ~Ruta 66. "If 'Itaca' was a colour explosion, 'Graceless' is an implosion, a gloomier, concise and intimate version of The Soulbreaker Company. Great production work by Liam Watson." ~This Is Rock (album of the month - January 2014). "Switch amphetamines for LSD in THE WHO and you get 'Graceless'. Spain's best band right now. That's it." ~Rock Zone (84/100) - Jan. 2014). 'Graceless' was analogically recorded in April 2013 at Toe Rag Studios (London) using vintage gear exclusively. The album was recorded live practically in its entirety. Liam Watson is in charge of production (Tame Impala, White Stripes, Electric Wizard) while mastering is Noel Summerville's work (White Denim, Efterklang, Astra).

GARAGE PUNK/ROCK & ROLL

BEATPACK - I'M WALKIN'/HEY SENORITA (7"/STATE)

Originally formed from the ashes of two small-town garage bands, The Beatpack initially peddled their primal wares from 1987 to 1991, terrorising audiences with their distinctive brand of violent Rhythm & Blues, their intense hessian-sack-clad live shows and their acres of hair. Recording an EP, a 45 and an LP for Germany's Screaming Apple Records, aided and abetted by Billy Childish on production duties, the group burned out in a blaze of glory and its members scattered to the four winds. Fast forward twenty years and the 'Pack are back. Reunited in order to complete their mission to bring hip-shakin', feedback-screeching, blues-wailing garage punk R&B to the masses, and featuring original members Simon Harvey (lead guitar), William Bourton Esq. (bass guitar) and Hugh Dellar (vocals and harmonica) alongside new boy Adrian Smith on rhythm and the inimitable Ian O'Sullivan on drums, the band have already played a pre-Purple Weekend night in Leon, Spain, the Berlin Beat Explosion and Le Beat Bespoke in London. Their first recordings since 1991 unleash the dynamism and tremolo-laden suspense of I'm Walkin' along with the crunchy Latin garage soul of Hey Senorita, both now proudly brought to you as a limited edition vinyl 45 by State Records.

TRAVEL CHECK - EP (7"/HOWLIN' BANANA)

Travel Check is a four piece flower punk band from Paris, France, and this here is their second EP, recorded during the summer of 2013. These four tracks show a significant evolution of their sound towards something lighter, wilder and fuzzier. From the catchy pop-infused single '66$' to the slow-paced hypnotic 'Feels Alright', this EP has chill out written all over it, so, just grab a drink, sit down, and give these songs an very enjoyable spin. Limited edition of 300 copies on white vinyl.

KENDALL, JOHNNY -& THE HERALDS- - GIRL/YOU TELL ME WHY (7"/MILKCOW)

The second release in Milkcow's 'Holy Grails Of Nederbeat' series is Johnny Kendall & The Heralds' 'Girl'. At last, an official reissue of this garage freakbeat monster! Kendall and his group came from Amsterdam and had a hit with 'St. James Infirmary' in 1964. They made their only LP the very next year, but for genuine beat-freaks 'Girl', from 1966, is the real deal. Fuelled with a loud and crunchy Kinks-style guitar riff, and typical Dutch-English vocals, it's a genuine killer song. This is a must-have for anyone who loves the rocking sixties Nederbeat sound. Limited edition, so act now or cry later!

SURF/HOTROD/INSTRUMENTAL

OS PONTAS - SURF OSTRO (7"/GROOVIE)

Os Pontas represent the best of the instrumental garage soul made in Brazil these days. Get Howlin' Wolf on the same stage with Booker T. & The M.G.'s, call The Ventures for the jam and you will have an idea of Os Pontas. Great instrumental hammond grooves with fuzz. They only use vintage Brazilian instruments, Giannini guitars and the famous Staner and Brabus tube amps. Full power rock'n'roll. Heavy carton deluxe edition, oldschool sleeve glued backflip.

EXPERIMENTAL/SOUND ART

COIL/NINE INCH NAILS - RECOILED (LP/COLD SPRING)

'Recoiled' is a rambunctious alchemy, of magikal Coil sensibilities and hi-tech home circa 90s mixing technique, all fused in the cave-like early studios of Danny Hyde/Peter Christopherson. These were the unrestrained PRE- BIG studio- mix downs, of four songs which long time Coil admirer/collaborator Trent Reznor requested Coil to remix. Reznor sent over the original multi-tracks and DATs to Hyde/Christopherson, who independently mixed versions and then met to synch both creations, molding them into these master versions. 'Recoiled' includes a fuller, more opulent version of the track 'Closer', which eventually made it onto the opening credits to the movie 'SE7EN'. These 5 lengthy compositions are pre-Ableton/laptop generation type priest song creations, with the use of baby alarms and numerous wires to create bespoke effects. These legendary tracks were always rumoured to exist and, only the due diligence of a dedicated NIN forum who hunted them down, are released/unleashed for your listening pleasure. 4 of the tracks were released on the download-only 'Uncoiled'. A bonus, previously unheard track from the same sessions closes the album. Jhonn Balance is also manifest on this gilded constellation. Beautifully remastered for vinyl. Black vinyl.

DRAGGING AN OX THROUGH WATER - PANIC SENTRY (LP/MISSISSIPPI)

Dragging An Ox Through Water is Portland musician Brian Mumford - a beloved and legendary local talent. Brian plays a brand of music uniquely his own....a weird mix of rock solid song writing with guitar accompaniment and music concrete. His voice is deep and heavy. 'Panic Sentry' is a pretty melancholy record, but never with a dull moment. Mississippi Records are very proud of this LP and consider it a contemporary classic. Includes a liner note insert. A co-release with Eggy Records.

GOLDSTON, LORI - CREEKSIDE: CELLO SOLO (LP/MISSISSIPPI)

Lurking around the Northwest music world for years playing with the likes of the Black Cat Orchestre, Earth, David Byrne, Terry Riley, Nirvana and a ton of other musicians, here we have Lori Goldston's beautiful cello playing in its purest form - unaccompanied and acoustic. The pieces on this LP all carry a certain level of austerity and gravitas, though they never come off as cold. On the contrary, they are warm emotional pieces of music played by someone who really knows their way around the cello. Lori has dedicated her life to music and we at Mississippi Records are very proud to present this LP filled with her visionary compositions.

Check out Lori Goldston's video HERE.

JARBOE - MAHAKALI (2LP/BLACK) (LP/THRONE RECORDS)

Since her days with the extremist 1980s noise rockers Swans, Jarboe has always had a singular vision for her music. MAHAKALI is a typically forbidding document, this time a song cycle based on the Hindu goddess of destruction, Kali. Jarboe and her collaborators incorporate extended feedback drones, industrial disco beats, elements of Scandinavian-style death metal, and passages of unexpected delicacy into this 15-track set, highlighted by the eight-minute centerpiece, 'Transmogrification.' ~The Wire. Featuring Phil Anselmo (PANTERA), Attila Csihar (MAYHEM), Colin Marston (BYLA), Kevin Hufnagel (BYLA) & Josh Graham (NEUROSIS, A STORM OF LIGHT).

KANCHE, MARCEL - AIMER L'EUNUQUE AVANT DE GLAUQUER (CD/INFRASTITION)

1983, Orleans, aside of Un Département, Marcel Kanche records and distributes this cassette tape, minimalist in the music and in the butchery-pink packaging. DIY instruments, spoken words female voices, trumpet, analog loops, a perfect example of 80s do it yourself minimal.

POLGAR, EVA -& SANDOR VALY- - GILGAMESH (CD/EKTRO)

'Gilgamesh' is the second joint music project of Éva Polgár and Sándor Vály. The music, based on the 5,000-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh, is pervaded by extreme expressiveness and melancholic minimalism simultaneously. On the borderline of different time dimensions, the work presents an insoluble tension between realization, death, and eternity. Polgar and Valy continue the musical dialogue already featured on their first album, 'The Mondrian Variations'. That is, the acoustic and electronic dialogue of piano, percussion instruments, and samplers.

60s/70s POP/ROCK

DUPREE, NANCY -& THE GHETTO REALITY YOUNGSTERS- - GHETTO REALITY (LP/MISSISSIPPI)

In 1969 Nancy Dupree was running an after school music program in Rochester, New York. She helped the kids in the program write songs that related to their own experiences and feelings. The results are presented on this LP, and they are really something else. There are black power anthems, odes to stealing candy, a beautiful tribute to James Brown and an even more beautiful tribute to Martin Luther King. Not a novelty record with kids being goofy but rather a heartfelt work of art. Nancy Dupree sensitively accompanies the kids singing on piano. A real classic. The cover is a faux Folkways style wrap around print on an old school "tip on" jacket. Includes a liner note insert. A co-release with our Moi J'Connais.

70s/80s/90s PUNK/HC

NUNS - RUMANIA (LP/RADIATION)

After several years of inactivity, California punk-wave group Nuns reunited in 1986 for this, their second LP. 'Rumania' focused on Jennifer Miro's synth-goth tendencies and, though it fell quickly into obscurity at the time, the years have been kind to it and its now regarded as a minor classic of '80s dark wave. Released on the soon-to-be-bankrupt PVC label, original copies now fetch a hefty sum online. Thankfully, the kind souls at Radiation have rescued this LP for the next generation, reissueing it on vinyl for the first time ever.

Listen to 'Romania' HERE.

NUNS - THE NUNS (LP/RADIATION)

Originally released by Posh Boy and BOMP! in 1980 The Nuns' debut LP is one of the classic pieces of San Francisco punk rock history. Formed in 1976 and fronted by the late, great Jennifer Miro on vocals and keyboards, and featuring songwriting contributions from alt-country legend Alejandro Escovedo (brother to Pete and Coke, and uncle to Sheila E.) - who left before the recording of the album - The Nuns bridges the gap between punk rock, new wave and goth rock.

Listen to 'Wild' HERE.

VARIOUS - AVON CALLING (LP/RADIATION)

Originally released on the Heartbeat label in 1979, and featuring the likes of Glaxo Babies, X-Certs, Vice Squad, Private Dicks, and The Stingrays, Avon Calling was the statement of intent of the late 70s Bristol post-punk scene. Though Bristol is certainly not the first city that comes to mind when the term "British post-punk" is mentioned, the music scene there during the late '70s was stylistically diverse and boundary pushing. There's no better example of the fruits of that scene than 'Avon Calling'; from straight punk to pub rock, art-punk to dubbed out jams, this comp has it all. A truly unique collection from England's most underrated post-punk metropolis. Side 1: 01. Glaxo Babies - It's Irrational 02. Europeans - On The Continent 03. Private Dicks - Green Is In The Red 04. Moskow - Too Much Commotion 05. Essential Bop - Chronicle 06. Directors - What You've Got 07. Various Artists - Own Up. Side 2: 01. Sneak Preview - Slugweird 02. Stingrays - Sound 03. X-Certs - Anthem 04. Apartment - The Alternative 05. Numbers - Cross-Slide 06. Vice Squad - Nothing 07. Stereo Models - Move Fast, Stay Ahead 08. Double Vision - My Dead Mother

Listen to 'It's Irrational' HERE.

WORLD MUSIC/ETHNIC

VARIOUS - MODERN MAYAN: THE INDIAN MUSIC OF CHIAPAS (LP/MISSISSIPPI)

'The Indian Music Of Chiapas, Mexico'. In the mid 1970's Richard Alderson made these amazing recordings in Chiapas, Mexico. A very unique blend of ancient music and modern rhythms. Here we have modern Mayan people singing folk songs accompanied by guitar, ragged brass bands, and much more. A trip into a very beautiful world. The cover is a faux Folkways style wrap around print on an old school "tip on" jacket. Includes liner notes. A co-release with Moi J'Connais.

METAL/STONER/HARDROCK

BONGRIPPER - HIPPIE KILLER (CD/GREAT BARRIER)

'Hippie Killer' is so good, you'll want to develop a massive marijuana habit right away and spend your days lurking through the ten part expedition of doom laden valleys and psychedelic post rock peaks, bong in hand. After the intro piece, Bongripper literally rips your head off and dumps all sort of riff heavy hallucinogens right down your neck. I am not kidding. Demon hands actually rip out of your speakers, threatening your very well being and replace your life with the chunkiest riffs known to man. And just when you think, "Damn! I needs me some oxygen!! Bongripper is stealing all the atmosphere!", just then, they lay on the breeziest post-rock bliss, sending you soaring through stratospheres of lost planets, skating on rings of Saturn, fluffy white clouds belying the utter sonic death you just experienced. These parts are equally as powerful as the face-melting doom they just ended your measly life with. Imagine if Godspeed You! Black Emperor just took a left turn into Absolutego territory. Not only would all those violin players be scared shitless, you'd have Bongripper standing right in front of you, blowing smoke right in your face, laughing Legions laugh! .....Review from Zen and the Art of Face Punching.

GOTHIC/DARKWAVE/ELECTRO

THALIE NÉMÉSIS - NÉMÉSIS (CD/INFRASTITION)

Thalie Némésis is a solo female project, bringing a dark, intimate, shivering, sometimes orientalist, dark music, inspired by universes as Lynch movies, gothic, cold wave, baroque, trip hop, riot girls. The Némésis album is an exploration of human soul contradictions, struggling with her darkside... Némésis, armful enemy of the Human Comedy, deity of revenge.
