SPOTLIGHT 443

24/03/2014 16:21

Welcome to the Spot Light! Enjoy the beginning of spring with some of new tunes this week. Legendary psychedelia, British popsike, hippie hard rock, dark ambient, progressive pop, electric folk, stoner, acid rock, French beat, improv noise... it's all here!

PSYCH/PROG/FOLK

BOEING DUVEEN & THE BEAUTIFUL SOUP - JABBERWOCK/WHICH DREAMED IT (7"/CAPTAIN HIGH)

Sam Hutt's legendary '68 psychedelic debut as Boeing Duveen, now reissued for the first time on 7-inch vinyl! Swirly sitar-sounds and British popsike meld into another colourful Magical Mystery Tour. Be sure to have some incense in the room! Fully licensed and limited to 500 copies with original labels!

Listen to 'Jabberwock' HERE.

FUZZ MANTA - THE STONEWOLF (2LP/BLACK) (LP/KOZMIK ARTIFACT)

The 2014 album by the popular female fronted hippie hard rock band, incorporating lots of tasty psychedelia. Their influences range from Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath to comtemporary artists like Black Mountain. Like a rainbow shining through storm clouds to give you advance warning of sunnier weather to come, Fuzz Manta rock out with some additional nods to '70s kraut and folksy elements mixed in. Edition of 200 copies on black 180-gram vinyl. Comes in a hand numbered gatefold cover.

Listen to 'Sooner or Later' HERE.

NIGHTSTALKER - SIDE FX (BLACK) (LP/LABYRINTH OF THOUGHTS)

Reissue on black vinyl of this album from 1994. Produced by Thodoris Manikas and Alex K. from The Last Drive, this is raw '70s rock with screaming and blistering wah-wah guitars, heavy SABBATH-like riffs and LEMMY-type vocals. The tracks are 'Spit', 'What Your Name Is', 'Funny Paper', 'Keep Knocking' and 'Mad Prophet'.

'Listen to Side FX' HERE.

SAAAD - DEEP/FLOAT (LP/HANDS IN THE DARK)

Edition of 300 copies on clear vinyl with a free mp3 download coupon. Following a number of quality drone/dark ambient releases on cassette including last years HITD release 'Orbs & Channels', as well as digital EP's, CD's and with some quality experimental collaborations and splits under their belts, it was high time that Romain Barbot and Greg Buffier got their 5 year evolution onto wax. And it has been worth the wait. 'Deep/Float' is arguably Saaad's most crafted and coherent work to date. This luminous album offers a 40-minute musical healing cure made up of a complex mix of field recordings, ambient improv and abstract drone. And, of course, the record wouldn't be complete without the tremendous artwork by Romain Barbot to visually complement the albums themes of sexuality and elemental forces.

SKORNIK, GUY - POUR PAUWELS (LP/LION PRODUCTION)

LP pressed on 180-gram vinyl in a one-time edition of 500 copies and including a 4-panel insert. Between 1970 and 1973, EMI/Path released several ambitious and progressive pop albums, including 'La Mort Dorion' (Gérard Manset), 'Puzzle' (Michel Berger), 'Hathor' (Igor Wakhevitch), and 'Pour Pauwels' by Guy Skornik. Skornik was a mystic explorer, psychonaut, and gifted musician, who was immersed in the metaphysical revolutions of his time. He presented television reports, laced with elements of Eastern mysticism, on LSD experiences. And then there was Skornik's album, 'Pour Pauwels', inspired by the revolutionary writings of Louis Pauwels, one-time counter culture hero and a disciple of esoteric spiritualist G.I. Gurdjieff. Guy was brought to the public's attention for the first time in the beginning of 1970 with the release of a magnificent LP on the Path-label. Skornik tried, and succeeded perfectly, to do with his music what Louis Pauwels did with his huge best-seller 'The Morning Of The Magicians'. The album features arrangements by Ivan Jullien (Françoise Hardy, Johnny Hallyday, Quincy Jones and Elton John). Licensed from Parlophone.

Listen to 'Gurdjieff' HERE.

SOUTAR, RICHARD - EPISODES (LP/VOID)

Very rare album from '78-'79. An amazing accomplishment of electric folkrock, harmony and more, as only Richard can do it. Much rarer and better than his earlier work 'Lavender Daydreams', this was just a 100 press way back. Now this legit Void pressing of 700 should get everyone a copy. 'Love's Fool' and 'Breaking Away' are the highlights. Lyrics included. The original copies had just a tiny picture of Richard pasted on the cover. For the Void Reissues they have encompassed the picture as well as full backing artwork front and back. A nice one and way overdue to be reissued on vinyl.

Listen to 'Episodes' HERE.

SWITCHBLADE JESUS - SWITCHBLADE JESUS (BLACK) (LP/BILOCATION)

Texas-based Switchblade Jesus is the 5-piece equivalent of a heard of elephants slamming into a brick wall. This album is a riff-rocking beast of stoner magnificence. Edition of 100 copies on 180-gram black vinyl, presented in a hand numbered heavy gatefold cover.

Listen to 'Bastard Son' HERE.

ABRAMIS BRAMA - ENKEL BILJETT (CD/TRANSUBSTANS)

CD released in digipack. Through the last 15 years Abramis Brama has released heavy, ecstatic, riff-oriented hard rock with Swedish lyrics and with the new album 'Enkel Biljett', the band continues their journey with new found energy. The band's sixth studio album, 'Enkel Biljett', shares the heavy hard rock foundation with its predecessors and at the same time showcases other dimensions of Abramis Brama than previously recorded. In Swedish the title 'Enkel Biljett' means one-way ticket, and the album is injected with a new spark and fire. The heavy riffs are of course still present as well as the psychedelic folky elements. Yet this time around there's more to comprehend, savor and appreciate.

THREE SEASONS - GROW (CD/TRANSUBSTANS)

Swedish acid rockers THREE SEASONS are heralded by fans and media alike for their genuine yet original '60s/'70s inspired sound, and it's easy to see why. With the muscular riffs, grooving rhythms and utterly tasty solos, the band has found a perfect way of approaching the hard-hitting psychedelic, jammy blues rock from the past. And if their earlier work got you excited, the band's 2014 full-length album 'GROW' is guaranteed to make you even go more crazy! 'GROW' offers up 8 songs of the highest quality, all of which showcase a special side of the band's music. You may expect a solid dose of hard psychedelic rock, but also mystical atmospheres, folky tunes, some Latin-style percussion and instru-mental trippery. This is a great album that marks a notable step forward in the band's development.

ROCK/POP/WAVE

FIRE HARVEST/REIZIGER - SPLIT 7" (7"/SUBROUTINE)

A temporary house swap between band members Geert en Gerben formed the base of this collaboration between Reiziger (BE) and The Fire Harvest (NL). By digging into each other's record collections they found out they had a lot in common. The result is a limited split 7-inch with new songs from both bands, wrapped in a 100% unique and 100% recycled sleeve. The single is released on Record Store Day 2014.

Listen to 'Win Some, Lose Some' HERE.

GARAGE PUNK/BEAT/ROCK & ROLL

AVERAGE TIMES - AVERAGE TIMES (LP/P.TRASH)

With hooks as poignant as these, the band is smart to bury them beneath layers of fuzz and distortion, lest they become too quickly disguised as the bona fide pop anthems they're built upon. Above all else, AVERAGE TIMES is unabashedly fun. Weird Canada calls this record "the audio equivalent of a devious and mischievous 12-yr-old with a slingshot", while Ottawa Showbox says "their high tempo makes you want to listen to them as you skateboard on a hot summer day"! No matter how you take that, AVERAGE TIMES is sure to cut the deep frost long overdue from Ottawa to your turntable!!!

Listen to 'Average Times' HERE.

FACTOTUM - KNIFE GUN (LP/STOLEN BODY)

Bristol-based garage rock duo Factotum have been working hard for the last couple years. In a city known more for its glaring passion for electronic beats and hardy clubbing culture, the band have been carving out their niche alongside kindred spirits Brown Brogues and The Bad Joke That Ended Well and have found their home at the fiercely independent, DIY spirited Stolen Body Records.

Listen to 'Knife Gun' HERE.

GENITAL HOSPITAL - STREET MUMMY (LP/P.TRASH)

Again a few tracks have a slightly southern touch owing to harmonica fills while others get driven by a simple but relentless organ vibe and cocksure all tracks kick ass - "Verdammte Scheisse". The whole damn thing is an all in all unique sounded smasher to burst any party - a really total boozy mess! Recorded & mixed by Jean-Michel Coutu, mastered by Ian of DAGGER EYES & perfectly illustrated by Darren Merinuk - a killer cover for 'Street Mummy', one he says may be his best ever!!

Listen to 'Street Mummy' HERE.

MARINELLIS, LES - LES MARINELLIS (LP/P.TRASH)

There is no doubt about the sound, solid recordings and excellent mastering ensure sweaty adventures in the haunts of your youth. Just taking a look at the cover and you get it: a kaleidoscope of colour, dark, purple, hazy, naked, sexy!!!

SPEEDBALL (USA) - DO UNTO OTHERS, THEN SPLIT (+7") (LP/EMETIC)

This title has never been issued on vinyl before and the CD/tape has been out of print for over 15 years since it initial release in 1995. The bonus 7-inch offers the four studio tracks from the 'Drive Like' EP that was originally released 1996. This deluxe gatefold jacket packaging is limited to 300 copies. Both the LP and 7-inch come on coloured vinyl! Limited to 300 copies. Motörhead's Lemmy loves Speedball, and you should too. The reference should be lost on no one too. Like Motörhead, Speedball played hard and heavy, gnarly, metal-tinged rock'n'roll complimented by whisky-gargling vocals.

Listen to 'Hog' HERE.

FRAISES DES BOIS - 4 TRACK EP (7"/CAMELEON)

Limited 300 copies reissue of an ultra-rare '60s EP by a French beat/psych band from Clermont-Ferrand. The 4 tracks were recorded live and the EP comes in nice picture sleeve. The tracks are 'You Better Run', 'Tell Me', 'Cadillac', and 'I'm On An Island'.

SPEEDBALL (USA) - GASHOLE (LP/EMETIC)

Originally released in 1999 on CD. This is the first time this has ever been on vinyl and the first time it has been in print since it's initial release. Limited to 300 copies on color vinyl. "Motörhead's Lemmy loves Speedball, and you should too. The reference should be lost on no one too. Like Motörhead, Speedball played hard and heavy, gnarly, metal-tinged rock'n'roll complimented by whisky-gargling vocals. What a band they were too (and are, when they play the occasional reunion show). Former Seduce drummer Chuck Burns played guitar and sang with Bill Kozy on guitar, Jeff King on bass, and Mike Alonso on drums. It's pure filth, with songs like 'Team Blowout', 'Murder Car' and 'Tight Black Pants' giving away exactly where this band is coming from. The focus was on the low brow. Muscle cars, girls and booze. Much like the MC5 before them, this is the natural progression of Detroit blues and rock'n'roll. Burns is singing about the things that were affected Detroit dudes in 1999, and it all still maintains its relevance today." ~Brett Callwood / Metro Times Detroit 9-21-11.

NOISE ROCK/DRONE/SLUDGE

VALINA - CONTAINER (LP/TROST)

Tight song structures, rapid-fire drum attack, tumbling low end, aggressive guitar skronk and razor sharp lyrics; Valina has boiled these songs down to their essentials and produced their most concise statement to date. Every note on this new album is delivered with confidence and urgency. The band has refined its mission statement and creates an intriguing mix of rhythmic interplay counteracted by decisive melody.
