PSYCHEDELIC/PROGRESSIVE
CAVERN OF ANTI-MATTER - INTERLUDE MUSIC (12"/DEEP DISTANCE)
The second of April 2014's pair of ace 12-inch singles features the third release for Tim Gane's killer post-Stereolab project Cavern Of Anti-Matter. It follows an exclusive 12-inch for Rough Trade and 2013's amazing full length 'Blood Drums'. Tim Gane, Joe Dilworth and Holger Zapf formed the band in Berlin in 2012. Essentially a power trio of sorts, the band's incredible full length was recorded in mono and then electronically processed for stereo. The music can be described as pulsing, geometric electronics with an industrial kraut edge. The tracks are 'Interlude Music' (Parts 1 and 2) and were recorded live in Berlin, in January 2014. Edition of 500 copies.

CIRCLE - LEVIATAN (LP/FULL CONTACT)
Finland's avant-rock explorers, Circle are at it again. Just a few months after their brutal exploitation of the capitalistic mindset behind the super rock idiom, Circle plunge into the oceanic depths of true self-expression with their album 'Leviatan'. Combining acoustic instrumentation with, at times, menacing vocals, complete with looming space sounds captured by NASA, the album yields a timeless, yet distinctively archaic klang. The ritualistic conviction of the group becomes obvious as the gritty idiosyncracy of the album gradually unfolds into a journey through spiritual anarchism, leaving the listener baffled at the exacting abandonment of the ensemble.

BURIAL HEX - IN PSYCHIC DEFENSE (CD/COLD SPRING)
Burial Hex is a composition cycle of post-industrial music, dubbed "horror electronics", by Clay Ruby. With a progressive mix of influences as far-reaching as vintage industrial and power electronics, kosmische music, black metal, techno and electro, early music and contemporary classical, these dynamic compositions are simply unclassifiable. This compilation continues the stunning trajectory of the previous Cold Spring reissue collection, 'Book Of Delusions', falling even further into the spiraling abyss of ritual music made in preparation for the Final Mysteries in the twilight of this Kali Yuga. Collecting tracks from various out-of-print vinyl releases, including 'In Psychic Defense', 'The Tower', 'Fantasie Und Fuge', 'Hunger', and the highly sought-after 'A Kiss To Birth The Rotted Sun' from the WVNDRKMMER 5xCS compilation, this volume is a welcome addition to every Burial Hex collection, as well as an ideal introduction for the horror electronics neophyte. TRACKs: 1. In Psychic Defense 2. Hunger 3. Fantasie 4. Und Fuge 5. To Birth The Rotted Sun 6. [Or: War] 7. The Tower

ZEA - THE SWIMMING CITY (LP/MAKKUM)
Since 2008 Zea is the solo project of Arnold de Boer (who is also singer and guitarist in Dutch band The Ex, since 2009). Before 2008 Zea was a duo and earlier a five piece band, but the songs were always written, arranged, recorded and produced by De Boer. 'The Swimming City' is Zea's fifth album, and the first one featuring guest artists. Immediately in the first song 'Sub Specie Ludens' Mats Gustafsson appears on baritone sax and 'People Shrink, People Grow' features Oscar Jan Hoogland on piano, who returns in 'All Words Have Been Here First', the song that also features the characteristic and recognisable clarinet playing of Xavier Charles who De Boer made a 7" single with in 2012 called 'Bourgeois Blues' (Makkum Records, MR 5). Zea has toured all over the world and played in thirty five different countries including Ethiopia and Ghana. In Ghana Zea set up a studio with local musicians where two of the songs on 'The Swimming City' were recorded: 'Dark Minded Me' and 'Ik Kin Der Net By'. This last song is sung in Frysian, De Boer's first language, who grew up in a small town called Makkum, in Fryslan in the northern part of The Netherlands. On this album Zea's songs sound more open and versatile. Zea music is direct music; fat-free and no words wasted. Some songs are about consciousness and some songs are about simple things; Zea can take a subject out of the world of encyclopedia and move it into the musical mind. They are the frescos of he twenty first century, unfolding before your ears. His tracks are elastic, urgent, always playful, joyfully obstinate and with double bottoms and open ends.

GARAGE PUNK/MOD/ROCK & ROLL
HIGHSPEED V - DEMENTED R&B (LP/GROOVIE)
A collection of all the existing recordings (including previously unissued tracks) from the short lived Swedish '60s garage-punk revivalists, active in the '80s. They included two members from the well known Crimson Shadows. The LP incluides an insert offering rare photos, and the full story on Stockholm's neo-garage scene (plus family tree) by Patrick Lundborg, author of The Acid Archives and Psychedelia books.
RIVALS, LES - LES RIVALS (LP/CASBAH)
And here it is, long-awaited, hoped for, dreamed of... the first album from Les Rivals will finally hit our turntables. In a state of perpetual change from the start, this Parisian quintet with its roots in Montreuil first burst onto the scene in 2009 with their debut single on Close Up Records, 'Who Are You' and its B side, 'We Did It (To Ourselves)' revealed a group nourished on '60s garage rock and already armed with extraordinary melodies. Two years later came the follow-up, 'Take You Out' / 'Girls', which, while still in the same vein, also revealed a more mature approach from songwriting pair Lefevre/Lister. Galloping rhythms, stinging guitars, swirling keyboards and well-seasoned vocals... the group, with a stable line-up at last, had found a winning brand of psychedelic pop. After a successful turn at the Cosmic Trip festival in Bourges, Les Rivals were soon at work on their next single, 'Sugar Babies' / 'Fruitcake', which came out in 2012 on Mauvaise Foi Records. This 7 inch allowed the band to show its two very different sides. Hallucinogenic and impossibly catchy on 'Sugar Babies', angsty garage rock on 'Fruitcake'. It's a natural progression from there to the album, which draws on much of the musical journey that the band has been on since its beginning. From freakbeat hymns to nostalgic vignettes of Swingin' London and hearty dollops of rock'n'roll, it's a psychedelic beast of a record, lovingly produced over many months in the studio. With twelve-string guitar, sitar, and even oboe and harpsichord all added to the mix, the Rivals have refined their smoke-hazed sound and created something even richer.

BOSSMEN - PERSONALLY YOURS: THE COMPLETE ANTHOLOGY (CD/LION PRODUCTION)
...THE BOSSMEN' - The contributions of Detroit area-based guitarist Dick Wagner to rock'n'roll history are quite jaw dropping. He was in The Frost and Ursa Major, and can be heard on famous albums by a.o. Lou Reed ('Rock'n'Roll Animal'), Alice Cooper ('Welcome To My Nightmare'), Kiss, Aerosmith, a.m.o. However, he started his career as a member of THE BOSSMEN, a garage-psych combo that existed from 1964-1967, and had no less than eight regional number one hit singles! This CD collects 18 tracks (all originals!) from that chapter, and the music is as impressive as it is enjoyable. Whether it's a stinging guitar solo (the sonic blast of an intro on 'Sunshine' comes to mind), a regal four part vocal harmony or a soaring arrangement, each tune bears the distinct early characteristics of the Wagner-sound that would later bring him success on a global scale. The CD comes with a full-colour 32-page booklet containing rare pix and liner notes by the man himself and others. Awesome!
PUNK/HARDCORE
CIRCLE - KUMILUOTI (7"/FULL CONTACT)
The new seven inch from Finland's Circle finds the band firing in-your-face punk. 'Kumiluoti' tears down the smokescreen of society with searing guitars and point-blank lyrics, navigating the ammo deep inside the corpse of capitalist machinery. The two songs reveal the plight of those exposed to the idiocies of blatant consumerism with surgical precision. Volatile, intense and straight to the point. Death to Society!

APOSTLES - PUNK OBITUARY (LP/BEAT GENERATION)
Reissue on vinyl of a noteworthy album by UK outfit The Apostles, originally released on Conflict's Mortarhate lable. Though firmly rooted in anarcho-punk, the music also showcases influences as diverse as industrial, avant-garde, folk and gospel. For anyone into (anarcho) punk history this is a relevant title. This welcome reissue is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve.

OUTSIDERS (UK) - CALLING ON YOUTH (LP/BEAT GENERATION)
The Outsiders were formed in Wimbledon, UK in 1976. Their 'Calling On Youth' album was the first DIY LP released world-wide after the explosion of the Buzzcocks' first 7-inch (' Spiral Scratch') but this LP is the first DIY punk full length. Adrian Borland (later frontman of The Sound), together with Bob Lawrence and Adrian James, formed the band and recorded and released this debut-LP on the Raw Edge Label in May 1977. A brilliant combination of the first punk steps mixed with some rock and also some hardrock moments in the vein of The Stooges, Modern Lovers and Peter Perrett's Only Ones. The final result was a seminal punk album with the energy and anger that typified the frustration that was so common for the youngsters of those days. Edition of 500 copies on black vinyl!

X_X - X STICKY FINGERS X (LP/FULL CONTACT)
Life's greatest pleasures are often its most fleeting. Witness, for example, the ephemeral run of X_X, a turbulent quartet that tore through Cleveland like a Dadaist cyclone for six months in 1978. Preceding his imminent relocation to NYC, burly, blond brawler John D. Morton assembled the project as a tighter, more rocking successor to his storied proto-punk act The Electric Eels. An early, practice-room incarnation included that group's inimitable singer, Dave E. McManus, as well as future 'Psychotronic Encyclopedia Of Film' author Michael J. Weldon. Shortly thereafter, the cast of characters stabilized to encompass razor-wire guitarist Andrew Klimeyk; CLE magazine editor turned bassist Jim Ellis; and drummer Anton Fier, who went on to fame and fortune with the Feelies, the Lounge Lizards, Pere Ubu, and the Golden Palominos. Pronounced "Ex Blank Ex," the name also doubled as a mental exercise in which a person could insert random words or phrases between the two letters in the moniker. Hence, Morton's jab at the Rolling Stones' sagging legacy for the title of this hotly-anticipated retrospective: 'X Sticky Fingers X'. Compiling a couple of prized singles with a feast of lo-fi but raging live and rehearsal material, the album boasts radical revisions of several Eels classics alongside tunes that would appear drastically altered on a Styrenes LP and on Klimeyk's solo seven-inch. As if that weren't sufficiently tantalizing, underground-culture historian and journalist Jon Savage penned the hepcat liner notes that accompany this "really boss set" of "mean sounds aimed at making your feet move." But forget that jive. The main lure is Morton's ridiculously potent cocktail of brute force, no-wave squall, and nihilistic art prank. Pissed-off vocals, ass-kicking riffs, a hard-charging rhythm section, and the whirr of onstage circular saws split the air.

SERRATO, MARCO - SEIS CANCIONES PARA CUERVO (CD/ALONE)
Marco Serrato is known for his projects Orthodox, Jacob and Hidden Forces Trio. A restless and eclectic musician in whose gallery of heroes we would find Quorthon or Glenn Danzig, also sharing place with Messiaen or Mingus. Experienced in the metal scene, he did not hesitate it in starting his late studies in classical music, combining them with many kind of projects. His varied career has taken him to do collaborations with different sorts of musicians, from flamenco dancer Israel Galván or musician and writer Julian Cope, to saxophonist Ricardo Tejero. Not to mention sporadic collaborations with bands like Ursula, Zinvmm and Tentudía. His broad discography is shared out amongst labels like Southern Lord, Utech Records, Bruce's Fingers and Knockturne Records. In 2013 Taauru (Knockturne Records) was his solo debut, a cassette tape that includes home-made improvs where Marco gave free rein to influences from musicians like Keiji Haino, Derek Bailey and Mats Gustafsson. Now he appears with his first album, 'Seis Canciones Para Cuervo'. In 'Seis Canciones Para Cuervo', Serrato deals with an unclassifiable, hermetic and personal work inspired by poet Ted Hughes words and recent personal experiences, the double bass being the undisputed focus. Six acoustic compositions that take us to a dismal journey that is not without some black humour. Recorded by Raúl Pérez at La Mina studios (Pylar, Viento Smith, Ursula, Pony Bravo...).

BLACK TO COMM - PROVIDENCE (12"/DEKORDER)
Volume 7 in Dekorder's series of highly limited hybrid-vinyl 12" releases to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the label. Black To Comm is the alias of Dekorder founder Marc Richter from Hamburg, Germany. Since 2003 Richter has released 7 full-length albums, including 2009's critically acclaimed 'Alphabet 1968' on Type Records, a monolithic 36-minute one-chord drone CD on Digitalis Recordings ('Charlemagne & Pippin'), 2011's vinyl-only collaboration with the late visual artist Mike Kelley on the En/Of label and three albums on his own Dekorder label. His latest album, a soundtrack for the film 'Earth' by Singapore artist Ho Tzu Nyen has been released on De Stijl in March 2012. 'Providence' is a brand new recording showing yet another new and exciting (and somewhat frightening) aspect of his multifaceted persona. Highly collectable vinyl-only release (no repress!) on a new format. Mastering and vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

Highly collectable vinyl-only release (no repress!) on a new format. Cut by Lupo at Calyx Mastering. Tracks: 01 Victory Beat 02 The Fence 03 I Zone.
EXPERIMENTAL AUDIO RESEARCH - ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL (PD) (12"/DEKORDER)
Volume 5 in Dekorder's series of highly limited hybrid-vinyl 12" releases to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the label. E.A.R. is Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom. He is one of the founders of legendary UK bands Spacemen 3 and Spectrum and currently works as a highly respected producer for Panda Bear, MGMT and others. While Spacemen 3 and Spectrum were mostly relying on song based structures E.A.R. explores free-form (and long-form) mind-altering drone based compositions. Previous albums came out on a diverse range of labels such as Sympathy For The Record Industry, Big Cat, Atavistic and Mille Plateaux and featured collaborations with Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig (Porter Ricks), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Kevin Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) and Eddie Prévost (AMM). Highly collectable vinyl-only release (no repress!) on a new format. Cut by Lupo at Calyx Mastering.

SOUNDTRACKS
UMBERTO - THE CHILD (12"/DEEP DISTANCE)
'The Child' is a hugely popular cut in its edited form on Matt Hill's first LP 'From The Grave.' In 2009, the full length version (clocking in just short of 12 minutes) appears here for the first time. As does the flip, a remix by Silvio which is far more beat driven and aimed at the dance floor; imagine some hybrid Daft Punk/Kraftwerk collision and you get kinda close. The original in its unedited form is a classic. Heavy on that uniquely chilling atmosphere present over Umberto's back catalogue, and drawing on a more percussive take to the Fright Night / Carpenter / Giallo / Goblin sounds commonly associated with Matt's previous output. A beautiful record on the eye and ear. Killer Tim Goodwillie sleeve art and a pressing of 500 on white vinyl. Be quick...

INDUSTRIAL/DARK AMBIENT
SHIFT - ALTAMONT RISING (CD/COLD SPRING)
Ferocious and misanthropic new full-length from Sweden's son Shift. 'Altamont Rising' is a calibration of the cosmic equilibrium in 7 chapters presented by Shift. The album deals with the consequences of man defying nature with Altamont as an example of what happens when pushed far enough. Three works/events stand as inspiration for the album: Apocalypse Now, Valhalla Rising and Altamont Free Festival. 'Altamont Rising' is a brutal amalgamation of malicious vocals, drenched in heavy, claustrophobic death industrial and harsh noise. TRACKS: 1. Circling Raptor 2. They Dont Suffer Enough 3. The Raptors Talons Tore Their Flesh I 4. Shelter 5. Rising 6. The Raptors Talons Tore Their Flesh II 7. The Greatest Ecstasy
