Whether it was coincidence, influence, or good old show biz imitation, Coven's 1969 album featuring the lead-off track 'Black Sabbath' was released the same year as the formation of the more popular heavy metal band. To make the story more even interesting, Coven featured a bass player named Oz Osborne. The soon-to-be-famous band Black Sabbath emerged a year after the release of this LP with a similar image and their own song called 'Black Sabbath.'

COVEN (USA) - BLOOD ON THE SNOW

COVEN (USA) - BLOOD ON THE SNOW

In the sure hands of Who producer Shel Talmy, this 1974 release on the Buddah label presents a much milder, even, dare we say, benevolent version of the band that launched the whole genre of Satanic rock. Part of this was no doubt due to Coven's having gotten a taste of ... read more »

SPRING - SPRING (2LP)

SPRING - SPRING (2LP)

Repress! Here it's difficult not to run out of superlatives, as this sole album of a bunch of relative unknowns beats almost everything in the UK progressive field. Side one is a sheer delight with natural, yet deeply moving melodies over a background of lavish but tasteful ... read more »

TOAD - DREAMS

TOAD - DREAMS

After the release of 'Tomorrow Blue', we have to wait 'til 1975 to find Toad's third album, unfortunately their last one. Originally released on Frog, 'Dreams' is a very good album that never got the attention it deserved because the band was a little bit disregarded by ... read more »

WARHORSE - WARHORSE (2LP)

WARHORSE - WARHORSE (2LP)

Repress! Nick Simper, formerly of Deep Purple broke away from the rock legends and started a band of his own. This is very good music, surprisingly so because of the fact that many spin-off groups fail miserably, and then again others make musical history, albeit very few. ... read more »
