George Jackson is one of the legendary names of southern soul. As a songwriter he has been responsible for scores of breathtaking songs the past 50-odd years. He has written beautiful southern soul gems for the likes of Spencer Wiggins, James Carr and Johnny Taylor but has been versatile enough to write One Bad Apple for the Osmonds, Old Time Rock and Roll for Bob Seger and to see his "Only Way Is Up become a UK number one for Yazz. As a performer he is revered for his beautifully versatile tenor voice, but his records were released on a variety of labels over a number of years and as such he never achieved anything like the success he should have done. This compilation mixes both released and unreleased cuts from his time in Memphis throughout the middle part of the seventies, and is the first of its kind.

JACKSON, GEORGE - THE FAME SESSIONS

One of the finest voices in Southern Soul, George Jackson's success as a writer meant he wasn't pushed as an artist and so his vinyl output is disappointingly small. This is rectified with this 12-track LP. It comprises ten tracks featured on Kent's George Jackson 'Fame' ... read more »

WILLIAMS, LEE 'SHOT'/HAROLD BURRAGE - HELLO BABY/PLEASE LOVE ME

A wonderful soul 7-incher! Harold Burrage's 'Please Love Me' was the original of the Monk Higgins song which became a local R&B hit for Betty Everett three years later. 'Hello Baby' by Lee "Shot" Williams is simply lowdown dirty R&B at its best.

The '60s recording on the A-side was a bit of a mystery for many years. The track, an obscure tape find (also known as 'Our Love Is Dying'), had been credited to Kae Williams for a long period, but the actual singer is one Joe Burrell. Mr. Burrell never achieved the fame ... read more »
