...To Do'. S.O.U.L.'s 'Burning Spear' was a standout of their debut album, but on 7 inch it was edited down to a monster slice of dancefloor funkiness. However that Musicor single is all but impossible to find, so our release gives this version its first ever reissue, backed with the breakbeat heavy 'Do Whatever You Want To Do' from their second album.

PURDIE, BERNARD 'PRETTY' - PURDIE GOOD

SANTAMARIA, MONGO -ORCHESTRA- - YEH YEH!/GET THE MONEY

Two 1963 Latin recordings on 7-inch. Cuban percussionist Santamaria was one of the first to take the Latin sound to the dancefloor, when his take on Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man' went to #10 in the Pop and R&B charts. Its follow-up, 'Yeh Yeh!' (featuring vocal ... read more »

GARNER, BILLY - YOU'RE WASTING MY TIME, PARTS 1 & 2

Detroit vocalist Billy Garner recorded a trio of killer funk titles for Dave Hamilton in the late '60s, and this is the final one to make it to a BGP 45. It has a relentless groove and its original release on New Day is very hard to find. As a special treat this release ... read more »

MATTHEWS, ROOSEVELT/MARIE 'QUEENIE' LYONS - TIGHTEN UP/SEE AND DON'T SEE

This has often been bootlegged under the title 'Tighten Up Tighter' and is a stunning version of the Archie Bell classic. This is backed by Marie 'Queenie' Lyons' 'See and Don't See' which rarely hangs around when an original on DeLuxe comes up for sale.

LYTLE, JOHNNY - SELIM/THE MAN

Two previously album-only '60s jazz dance classics. Vibes player Johnny Lytle always made records that were full of soul, but 'Selim' -first released on the tiny Tuba label- is a step above. A shuffling modal classic, this is essential.

FAME GANG - GRITS & GRAVY: BEST OF THE FAME GANG

Stax had the MG's, Motown had the Funk Brothers and Fame had The Fame Gang. The latter was a crack Alabama studio outfit that provided the necessary backing for hundreds of essential soul and pop records made at the Fame studio in the late 1960's and early 1970s. As with ... read more »
