LP on 180-gram vinyl. Back in '70s Oakland, California, streetwise hipster William Darondo Pulliam was a funky
singer-songwriter who could also swing the sweetest soul west of Al Green. His handful of idiosyncratic 45 releases are crowned by the heartbreaking sound of his 1973 local hit 'Didn't I' on the collectable Music City label. 'Listen To My Song: The Music City Sessions' collects an unprecedented goldmine of grooves, and shows off Darondo in his streetwise prime.

Reissue of 1974 soul/funk single by singer/guitarist Darondo.

DARONDO - LISTEN TO MY SONG/DIDN'T I

Reissue of 1973 soul/funk single by singer/guitarist Darondo. 'Didn't I' is undoubtedly the most recognizable and notable song in Darondo's amazing catalog, thanks in part to a feature in TV's cult-classic 'Breaking Bad'.

MATTHEWS, ROOSEVELT/MARIE 'QUEENIE' LYONS - TIGHTEN UP/SEE AND DON'T SEE

This has often been bootlegged under the title 'Tighten Up Tighter' and is a stunning version of the Archie Bell classic. This is backed by Marie 'Queenie' Lyons' 'See and Don't See' which rarely hangs around when an original on DeLuxe comes up for sale.

FUNKADELIC - CAN'T SHAKE IT LOOSE/I'LL BET YOU

Originally scheduled to be the second Funkadelic 45, 'Can't Shake It Loose' was cancelled before release in the early '70s. The song had previously been a single (and northern soul classic) by Pat Lewis, whilst the Supremes had recorded it for Motown. It's fascinating to ... read more »

SANTAMARIA, MONGO -ORCHESTRA- - YEH YEH!/GET THE MONEY

Two 1963 Latin recordings on 7-inch. Cuban percussionist Santamaria was one of the first to take the Latin sound to the dancefloor, when his take on Herbie Hancock's 'Watermelon Man' went to #10 in the Pop and R&B charts. Its follow-up, 'Yeh Yeh!' (featuring vocal ... read more »

BYRD, BOBBY - HELP FOR MY BROTHERS: PRE-FUNK SINGLES 1963-68

These 24 tracks, released during the '60s on Federal, Smash and King, are essential in the development of James Brown's music and, as such, historically important as well as truly fantastic. The Byrd family helped rescue Brown from his time in prison in the early '50s. ... read more »

MARROW, ESTHER - CHAINS OF LOVE/WALK TALL

Two astounding funk cuts by Esther Marrow that have never previously been available on 45. Esther turns J.J. Barnes' Detroit soul stomper into a funk tour de force, whilst her version of Joe Zawinul's 'Walk Tall' was the original vocal version of this funky jazz standard.

VARNARDO, LYNN - TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE MEN

Two great northern soul cuts from 1973. 'Tell Me...' was the flip of her hit 'Wash And Wear Love', but on this release it's backed with 'Staying At Home Like A Woman' which makes its debut on vinyl here.
