'Gently Down Your Stream' marked a creative zenith within the Columbus, Ohio, soul scene, at the juncture of the 1960s and '70s. The Four Mints were one of the most influential local group harmony outfits of their era and -with assistance from Columbus doyen and Capsoul purveyor Bill Moss- among the few to release a full length LP. The roster of backing musicians hired to provide aural landscaping reads like a Midwest supergroup, with surprising appearances from Indianapolis-based vibraphonist Billy Wooten and drummer Bobby Allen of the Fabulous Originals from Dayton, Ohio. And though most of the material on 1973s 'Gently...' had been previously released as 45s, the collection (five singles and one priceless track saved from the scrap heap) gives witness to a world-class vocal quartet at its professional and intuitive peak.

MIND & MATTER - 1514 OLIVER AVENUE (BASEMENT)

Jimmy Jam Harris was just 16 when he began writing and arranging for Minneapolis 11-piece Mind & Matter. Boasting a perfectly calibrated vocal quartet, an aggressive rhythm section, and stacks of Rhodes, Rolands, and Hammonds, the danceable act failed to win favor with ... read more »

LEE, SHIRLEY ANN - SONGS OF LIGHT

When Numero wrapped the track list of 2009s Local Customs: Downriver Revival, we knew there was a smaller second record buried in the mountains of tape rescued from Felton Williams Ecorse, Michigan basement. As the Revival labels lone "star," Shirley Ann Lee was ... read more »

MEGIRA, CHARLIE - TOMORROW'S GONE (2LP)

The bastard love child of Elvis and Lux Interior, Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira brewed a heady amalgam of '50s trash rock, surf-y tremolo, and reverb-drenched goth during his all-too-brief 44 trips around the sun. He recorded seven albums worth of material in 15 years, ... read more »

ROYAL JESTERS - ENGLISH OLDIES (2LP)

'English Oldies' rounds up 28 homespun stunners from the Alamo City's scrappiest souleros. ROYAL JESTERS were the undisputed kings of San Antonio's cross-cultural teen scene in the 1960s, soundtracking lovelorn slow dances with their heart-sick harmonies. This set includes ... read more »

HARRIS, CALVIN - LOVE'S RECIPE/WIVES GET LONELY TOO

Previously unreleased, this 1972 pair of Calvin Harris masterfully crafted Earl Wiley-produced sweet soul demos might've stayed totally unknown, if it weren't for Ed Cody's devious forethought. An engineer at Chicagos Stereosonic facility, Cody duped himself a submaster ... read more »
