Fuzz is comprised of Ty Segall (drums/vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar/vocals) and Roland Cosio (bass). They're heavy rock lifers, three California-bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school (which wasn't that long ago, actually). If you are not already aware of Segall, well, what's up? He's one of garage rock's most prolific sons. He said he was going to take it easy this year, but by the time you finish reading this, the onesheet for his next record will have already arrived in your inbox. Moothart plays guitar in The Ty Segall Band and was also a member of The Moonhearts, which included Cosio on guitar. Way back in the early '00s, all three played in the Epsilons. Fuzz was formed a couple years ago as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but only recently did the pair have sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, 'This Time I Got a Reason' (Trouble In Mind) and 'Sleigh Ride' (In The Red). Around the time of the latter, Cosio joined on bass. They are not dabblers or dilettantes. Fuzz flipped through used bins, hard drives and record collections of the world, seeking out the finest weirdo cuts. The band's self-titled debut LP, which was recorded by Chris Woodhouse (Thee Oh Sees, The Intelligence), dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, obviously, but on 'Sleigh Bells' you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into full-bore choogle. Maybe you'll even glimpse the ghost of Australian guitar legend/sharpie guru Lobby Lloyde sniffing around 'Raise'. The mood is not light. The songs project a state of perpetual paranoia and eroding mental health.

Also available: FUZZ (LP).

FUZZ - LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO

FUZZ - LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO

TY SEGALL's stoner thrashers not only totally murdered this set at San Francisco leather-daddy hangout The SF Eagle, but it was Ty's birthday and he blew out his birthday cake candles mid-song, didn't miss a beat, and that moment is forever etched into this record. (And ... read more »

MYSTERY GIRLS - INCONTINOPIA

Green Bay, Wisconsin's Mystery Girls were mere teenagers when they started out. Now in their early/mid-20s, the boys (er, Girls) have delivered their most cohesive work yet on their third album, Incontinopia. It's unclear what Incontinopia means but it's a good bet that ... read more »

SIMPLY SAUCER - CYBORGS REVISITED (2LP)

Classic garage-psych/proto-punk from Canada! Recorded in 1974 and 1975, but unissued at the time, 'Cyborgs Revisited' became a critically revered classic when it was finally unearthed in 1989 by Mole Records. The music sounds like an unusual mixture of Hawkwind, The Kinks, ... read more »

WARM DRAG - WARM DRAG

WARM DRAG - WARM DRAG

The self-titled debut-album by a duo based in New York City. Vashti Windish sings the way Siouxsie sang power, the way Nico sang allure, or the way Patti sang sex, while Paul Quattrone makes the noise with two Akai MPC 1000 samplers.

CHEAP TIME - CHEAP TIME

Henderson, Tennessee's Jeffrey Novak is a name familiar to those who pay attention to the whole lo-fi-garage-punk underbelly of today's indie scene. He's released a handful of singles and at least one album on labels in the US and Europe as a one-man-band and with his ... read more »

INTELLIGENCE - DEUTERONOMY

Their soundscapes would be set in a grainy, ash-gray world, among piles of scrap metal & busted machinery, with discarded computer parts blinking in cobwebbed corners & factories belching out toxins at irregular intervals. The music is so jagged & cinematically ... read more »
