At the core of Kansas City's vibrant classic-era soul scene was no record label or studio, but America's Best Attractions, run by booking agent Allen Bell. America's Best, and the exceedingly above-board Bell, kept countless local acts roadweary and comfortably paid. Bump & the Soul Stompers, led by Jerald "Bump" Scott, was among several Bell-related acts that bounced through enviable careers without ever having to enter a recording studio. Even so, "Bump" Scott did lead his band into one of the regions best-known facilities: Damon Studios (deeded to Victor Damon, inventor of the spring reverb, and not to be confused with big band great Vic Damone). Bump and company's first single, had ever been released, "I Can Remember" momentarily recalls The Delfonics "Do You Remember" before flipping its melody the other way around. On the B-side, "Standing On The Outside" makes further appeals to the lowrider set, brakepedaling the tempo a notch or two.

PISCES (USA) - A LOVELY SIGHT

PISCES (USA) - A LOVELY SIGHT

1969's 'A Lovely Sight', Pisces' only attempt at an LP, never made wax; but the fuzz guitar phrases and tambourine shuffle of 'Dear One' instantly illustrate the band's woozy realm. Deeper inside, bass scales borrowed from Sgt. Pepper give way to Who moves wrecked by bad ... read more »

COWELL, JEFF - LUCKY STRIKES & LIQUID GOLD

COWELL, JEFF - LUCKY STRIKES & LIQUID GOLD

Ten road-weary tales from the wrong side of outlaw country. Jeff Cowell may have huffed the same narcotic air as Townes Van Zandt and David Allan Coe, but hunkered far from the Nashville city limits, nary a Cash or Paycheck would drunkenly slur through his tunes. Recorded ... read more »

LOVO, ALFONSO - LA GIGANTONA

MEGIRA, CHARLIE - TOMORROW'S GONE (2LP)

MEGIRA, CHARLIE - TOMORROW'S GONE (2LP)

The bastard love child of Elvis and Lux Interior, Israeli guitarist Charlie Megira brewed a heady amalgam of '50s trash rock, surf-y tremolo, and reverb-drenched goth during his all-too-brief 44 trips around the sun. He recorded seven albums worth of material in 15 years, ... read more »

CODEINE - BARELY REAL (2LP+CD)

From 1990-1994, New York City's Codeine were making somnambulant waves on a musical landscape reeling from Sub Pop's better known exports. 1991's Frigid Stars LP, 1992's Barely Real, and 1994's The White Birch received much critical praise upon release, but Codeine ... read more »

DOHENY, NED - SEPARATE OCEANS (2LP)

DOHENY, NED - SEPARATE OCEANS (2LP)

With no less than a mansion, a state beach, and a three-mile stretch of road bearing his fabled family's name, Ned Doheny easy-glided into the 1970s on a crest of wealth and privilege. Signposting Ned's sojourn through the LA recording industry were Jackson Browne, Glenn ... read more »
