Two cuts from Mali's rich early '70s scene. Side A features a track from one of the country's best known outfits, Rail Band, also known as Super Rail Band and Bamako Rail Band. Led by the legendary Salif Keita, this group's unique style was a fusion of Afro-Latin jazz and traditional music. With a catchy trumpet line running over the top and throughout, this track (from the band's 1973 LP on RCAM) is super funky and tight from the first beat. And we hear non other than Mory Kanté on lead vocals! After he left The Rail Band, Salif Keita joined Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako. This group is present on the B-side with a James Brown cover showcasing a psychedelic West African twist. The atmosphere is dominated by loud and proud JB style call-and-response vocals, driving organ, drums and guitar.
