The Stormmers was a group led by Renny Pearl, former bandleader and bass player with Aktion (The Aktions/Aktion 13), an Afro funk band from Warri, Nigeria that burned brightly and briefly in the mid-'70s. With the help of Jake Sollo, an ex-Funkee and recently reconstituted disco dandy, the guys created 'Lovers Song', an album of frantically musical bass lines, skittery high hats and an irresistible urge to get onto the dancefloor. The album was recorded in Nigeria and the UK and released in 1981, a time in Nigeria when oil prices were falling, beats-per-minute were rising and clubbers wanted to party like there was no tomorrow. The urgent, salacious sounds of The Stormmers suited that mood perfectly. (Peter Moore, www.africanrevolutions.com)

Also available: LOVERS SONG (CD).

GOLDFINGER DOE & B.M.S. - LET'S DANCE TOGETHER

William Onyeabor wasn't the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the '70s and '80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on 1979's 'Let's Dance Together', a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist Mike Umoh ... read more »

APOSTLES (NIGERIA) - THE APOSTLES

The Apostles were disciples of a heavy kind of psychedelic soul/rock fusion. After The Funkees left for London, they stepped into the breach to become the champions of East Nigeria's flourishing post-war music scene. This album from 1976, containing a heavy mix of wailing ... read more »

BETA YAMA GROUP - FREE LOVE

BETA YAMA GROUP - FREE LOVE

It's hard to get a handle on Nigerian musicians Nash Dodoo, Charlie Cuul and Jonas Caulley. In 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the BML chapels. And in the same year, calling themselves the Beta Yama Group, they put out 'Free Love', a belated ... read more »
