Repress! Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Banda Black Rio was formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhaes. The band revolutionized black instrumental music through a Brazilian re-interpretation of soul, jazz, funk and disco grooves. Inspired by a.o. Tim Maia, the result was at times reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire during the '70s. Originally released by Atlantic in 1977, 'Maria Fumaca' was the group's first album and it brought the group worldwide fame.
