Repress! This classic 1974 Afro-funk delivery (originally on EMI Nigeria) gets a welcome reissue. It's no exaggeration to say that Geraldo Pino and his band the Heartbeats kickstarted the whole soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa. Mixing highlife, funk and jazz, and using the latest equipment, they laid waste to all before them. In 1966 Fela Kuti was a jobbing musician, eeking out a living with highlife bands. When Geraldo Pino came to town, it changed his life.

Also available: LET'S HAVE A PARTY (CD).

DANDY, TREVOR - DON'T CRY LITTLE TREE

DANDY, TREVOR - DON'T CRY LITTLE TREE

A gentle album full of consoling tunes, more or less in the vein of Cat Stevens' 'Morning Has Broken', but with a bit more soul (although this association might be caused by the insistent use of piano on this record). This ultra-rare pearl of funky gospel music was the ... read more »

Reissued on CD, 1974's 'Moving World' is a holy grail of Ghanaian groove alchemy. The title track and 'Brotherhood Of Man' are hard, grinding funk outings, while 'Jungle Music' has a more soulful groove. There's also a bit of reggae in 'Dracula Dance' and old-skool highlife ... read more »
