'Tam Tam' was inspired by Burundi drummers playing on the plaza in front of Beaubourg in Paris, where the song was recorded. The single was first released in 1981 by West African Music, a tiny label from the Ivory Coast, followed a year later by Island Records in the UK (on which occasion the B-side was re-named 'Tim Toum'). Each copy of the 2017 reissue on 12-inch vinyl includes a double-sided insert with photos and liner notes.
