With his refined fingerpicking guitar playing and his friendly, soft voice Mississippi John Hurt provided his own unique interpretation of the blues that was rooted in songster and ragtime traditions. He recorded for Okeh Records in 1928, but did not want a musical career and kept working on his farm. He was quite surprised when he was rediscovered in the 1960s and was invited to perform at the Newport folk festivals. His recordings became a source of inspiration for Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk and Taj Mahal.
