Often obscured by the ascent of Flying Nun's legendary roster is New Zealand's late 1970s/early 1980s punk scene. Based in Auckland, a cadre of acts influenced by The Ramones and Stooges briefly thrived. 'Let There Be Noise', the 1981 album from the Dum Dum Boys also contains elements of Iggy Pop's nihilism. The band understood the proto-punk sounds of the 1970s. More importantly, they also got the vibe. As the title suggests, the album is anything but a record incessantly focused on introspective doom and gloom. It was self-released and copies quickly became very sought after, even in New Zealand. In The Red reissues this obscure and outstanding record.
